A young island
Iceland 's nature and geology is much younger than what we're used to in Central Europe. Its rough and wild cliffs, high waterfalls and the deep green moss-grown lava fields are the beautiful characteristics of Iceland which seem to take the visitor to a different planet.
This year Iceland suffered from a particularly dry and warm summer and autumn. The grass on the fields was dry and yellow, the beaches of Iceland's south are of fine black sand and the late afternoon sun light gave it all a very special color mix.
On tour
We visited Snæfellsnes, Reykjavik of course, the Blue Lagoon, Vík í Mýrdal where some of the black sand beaches are found.
We saw the volcanos of Eyjafjallajökull, Hekla and Hengill. The area around Hengill offers a number of hiking trails for distances of up to 40km.
On the northern shore of Þingvallavatn we visited Þingvellir.
Iceland is known for its fosses (waterfalls). Among other fosses, we traveled to Gullfoss, Glymur, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Hjálparfoss.
Where to eat in Iceland
Iceland's restaurants mostly offer sea food and lamb. In Keflavik we very much liked the fish they served us on two occasions in the Duus Hus and in Reykjavik we spent quite some time in The Muffin Bakery where we probably tried all of their muffins.
In Selfoss we came across the Almar Bakari on Asturvegur 3-5. They have very good pastry. They too saw us more than once.
Rent a house
During the first week we traveled from hotel to hotel in a Nissan Qashqai+2 SUV. In the second week we stayed in a house in Illagil - see green arrow on the map below.
From Illagil we undertook day trips either by foot (Hengill hiking) or by car to Þingvellir, to the Stokkar geysir, to Gullfoss and to other places of interest.
